Giornate Géza Anda 2019
meet the piano
Cervo, 19 to 22 July 2019

Géza Anda and the Géza Anda Competition
Géza Anda was not only a brilliant virtuoso – indeed, unique of his kind – but a superb teacher and introspective musician too, who set the bar in the performance of the most significant piano works, in particularly the concertos of Bartók and Mozart. The Anda ideal can be conceived as being a balance between imaginative force, lyrical beauty of sound and precise analysis, and this has had a huge impact on succeeding pianists generations that goes far beyond the time of his (premature) death. His widow, Hortense Anda-Bührle, set up the Géza Anda Foundation and the Concours Géza Anda in 1979 ; the latter has become one of the most prestigious and demanding competitions for pianists in the world. The goal of the Géza Anda Festivals, being staged for the seventh time in Europe, is to convey to talented students of the piano and to a wider audience the artistic creed of Anda through masterclasses and concerts by competition winners. After Anda, a graduate of the legendary piano class of Ernö Dohnány at the Liszt Academy of Music, moved from Berlin to his chosen homeland of Switzerland. The Giornate Géza Anda in Cervo are intended to contribute to the living memory of Géza Anda.
